SOHO NAS

Today the mailman brought me the NAS device I recently ordered. It is a nice and shiny Synology DS-101J with a 320GB disk:

The device will replace the recently broken WinXP Desktop machine for all its network related storage and UPNP serving. Next to this we’ll use the device for making backups of my wife’s laptop; […]

Finally: Flash 9 for linux!

Today Adobe fixed my main problem related to browsing the web using Linux: they’ve released a working version (9) of the Flash player plugin capable of playing flash 8 files for Linux. Release notes of the player can be found here the player itself can be downloaded here.
After installation Firefox prints the following info for […]

osx on ubuntu

The release of the Intel version OSX a while ago kept me thinking about running OSX on my Dell notebook. Yes, I do have G4 iBook …. but I just wanted to know if it is possible.
While searching I found some excellent tips on http://www.osx86project.org/.
Testing applications in Safari would be the main purpose, so I […]

Printing from Linux… again

Last week our HP PSC2110 printer/scanner broke down. Danielle did a bit of research and decided we should buy a Canon PIXMA 4300, best bang for buck if she wants to print high resolution design and pictures.
Installation on the windows box we use as a printer/fileserver went smooth, and even the pictbridge is working […]

Named pipes

Last friday the guy behind the twinview setup on the desk in front of me tipped me on named pipes. Bash uses named pipes in a really neat way. When you enclose a command in parenthesis, the command is actually run in a subshell; that is, the shell clones itself and the clone interprets the […]

Sjoerd goes ubuntu!

In the weeks just before Sjoerd was born I ordered the geekiest thing I ever ordered in my entire live: the ubuntu creeper. I ordered the smallest size, but it took Sjoerd 8 months, 1 week and 5 days to grow into it. But here it is!

Looking at him like this takes me being […]

Fun with XMØDMÂP

A colleguea of mine noticed me struggling with testing unicode support for the current application. I actually never knew a decent way to enter all those pesky (ë ę ç è ñ) characters.
The following xmodmap line will bind the right alt key (commonly known as alt-gr) to the multi (or ‘compose’) key:
xmodmap -e ‘keysym Alt_R […]

Google earth for Linux!

Google’s earth, a 3d interface to the planet, is now availlable for linux (natively) as well. Now if only they would include higher resolution pictures of my area (and yes, I wouldn’t mind the 3d building outlining either ;)):

But anyway, great job getting a native linux port out Google!

Sun and Ubuntu

Slashdot reported on the following zdnet article. The following quote sort of summarizes the main point:

At JavaOne, Ubuntu got a ringing endorsement from Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz on Tuesday in San Francisco. In turn, Ubuntu project founder Mark Shuttleworth appeared on stage during Schwartz’s opening keynote at JavaOne to endorse Java.

I think this is great […]

WIFI, again

Today I replaced our US Robotics access point by a Linksys WRT54g, hopefully to get rid of all the connection problems we had before. After configuring the iBook and WinXP machine I tried to get my laptop to associate with it using dappers’ BCM43xx kernel driver. Couldn’t get it to work…
Finally I decided to get […]
