osx on ubuntu
Published by peter October 17th, 2006 in fun, linux.The release of the Intel version OSX a while ago kept me thinking about running OSX on my Dell notebook. Yes, I do have G4 iBook …. but I just wanted to know if it is possible.
While searching I found some excellent tips on http://www.osx86project.org/.
Testing applications in Safari would be the main purpose, so I took some time to get OSX running on vmware (server) (previous experience tells me having to reboot for a simple test just isn’t workable).
Installation took a while, mainly because I forgot to assign a fair amount of memory to the target VM, and I had to boot the installer in safe mode (-x in the boot menu). Apart from this the installation was as straightforward as it should be.
The resulting image does work, but is dog slow… and seems to be really unstable, but did I mention that it works? Here are some screenshots:
Now, if someone could find out how to get some performance out of this setup it would be really useful for multi platform testing!

i’m trying to install osx under ubuntu (i just need it to run safari and test my work on it !)
i just can’t get it to work … the cd loads and it doesn’t go past the first apple screen with the swirling indicator …
what does your vmx file looks like ?

Well, for the ‘making people register to post comments’ … otherwise I’ll be buried in spam (I get about 10 spam posts a day…. don’t want them in my weblog).
On the topic of your question:
at first I had the same problems you had, the where solved by increasing the initial amount of memory assigned to your VM (I assigend 768mb). I must say that the resulting VM works, but is not even useful for testing it’s far to slow IMHO.

re: comment spam, try askimat plugin for wordpress … since i installed it, i never had any spam, it caught them all
re: osx, still trying, no hope yet … i still get the spinning wheel of death … maybe it’s my osx cd ? i’ll get another version and try with it, though this one worked for me before …
